今回はニューヨーク。

映画監督、写真家でもあるシェリル・ダンと、家具作家、プロスケーターのルーク・マラニーの2人です。

写真雑誌としてテキストは最小限で展開していた.OWT.ですが、今号から読者の皆さまにもっとお伝えしたいとの気持ちからテキストがボリュームアップされています。

今のニューヨークや、今の時代について語られている部分など、個人的にとても共感できる内容で読み応えがある、何回も読みたくなる一冊です。

ニューヨーク在住。
2013年発表、ドキュメンタリー映画「Everybody Street ( フォトグラファーズ・イン・ニューヨーク )」、ニューヨークを代表する偉大なストリートフォトグラファーたちを通して彼らの生き方やニューヨークに対する思い、ストリートフォトグラフィー、そしてその考えをドキュメントしたフィルム。
2021年発表、「Moments Like This Never Last」アーティスト、グラフィティーライターのDash Snowを捉えたドキュメンタリーフィルム。若くしてこの世を去ってしまった彼のドキュメンタリー映像は大変貴重な作品です。
写真作品はマークゴンザレス、バリーマギー、ESPO を始め様々なアーティストやスケーター、ボクサー、デモの人々など、現在もストリートのキャラクターを撮り続けています。
カオスの集合体でもある場所で美しくも儚い数々のドラマを捉えた作品達は時代を象徴し続けています。
現在の彼女のインタビューを通して、改めてニューヨークストリートカルチャーとは、ニューヨークで生きる事とは何なのかを再考出来る内容をお届け致します。


Luke Malaney
Furnitureworker / Professional Skateboarder

ニューヨーク在住。
Traffic skateboardsのプロライダーでもある木工作家のLuke。
彼の生み出す家具や椅子、照明は木材や銅板などを組み合わせ歪さと可愛らしさが融合した家具と言うよりもアートオブジェに近い作品を発表し続けています。
インテリア、アート作品として他に類を見ないその造形のアイディアは何から生み出されているのか?
The New Yoke Times、Wallpaper、AD、HYPEBEASTなど様々なメディアでも取り上げられ注目されている。
彼のシェアスタジオでスケートボードの事や家具の事、手工具を使用し最初から最後まで手作業で作品を作る事を楽しんでいる彼自身のこと、哲学、作業風景、作品を本誌で紹介します。
『本当に作りたい物を作って自分の物語を作り上げられるのは嬉しいこと。
スケートボードだとステアをメイクするみたいなものだと思う。

編集者/ライター。東京都出身。13歳でスケートボードに出合う。
アメリカのカルチャーに憧れ21歳で渡米。
ロスアンゼルスでカルチャー誌、ファッション誌、広告などのコーディネーターとして活動する。
帰国後、編集者/ライターとしてカルチャー誌やファッション誌などで執筆。
また広告制作に国内外で広く携わる。
アメリカのスケーターやアーティストたちを日本に紹介し、試写会や写真展グループなどのキュレーターとしても活動。
著書に、進化するタイカルチャーを新しい視点から紹介する「New New Thailand 僕が好きなタイランド」(トゥーヴァージンズ)やアメリカのスケーター、アーティストを取材したインタビュー集「ア・ウェイ・オブ・ライフ ~28 人のクリエイタージャーナル」(P-vine Books)がある。

This is .OWT. Issue 05 from .OWT. Independent Publishing.

This is the fifth issue of .OWT., which focuses on two people each issue.

This time it's New York.

The two people are Cheryl Dunn, a film director and photographer, and Luke Mullaney, a furniture maker and professional skater.

As a photography magazine, .OWT. has always had a minimal amount of text, but from this issue onwards, the text has been increased in volume in order to convey more to readers.

The parts that talk about New York today and the current era are very relatable to me personally, making it a worthwhile read that I want to read over and over again.

There is also a video shot with an 8mm camera, which you can view by scanning the QR code.

Living in New York.
The documentary film "Everybody Street (Photographers in New York)" was released in 2013, and it documents the way of life, thoughts about New York, street photography, and thoughts of great street photographers representing New York.

"Moments Like This Never Last" was released in 2021. It is a documentary film capturing artist and graffiti writer Dash Snow. The documentary footage of him, who passed away at a young age, is a very valuable work.

His photographs continue to capture street characters, including Mark Gonzales, Barry McGee, ESPO, and various other artists, skaters, boxers, and demonstrators.

The works, which capture the beautiful yet fleeting dramas in a place that is also a collection of chaos, continue to symbolize the times.

Through her current interview, we will deliver content that allows you to reconsider what New York street culture is and what it means to live in New York.

Living in New York.

Luke is a woodworker and a professional rider for Traffic skateboards.
The furniture, chairs, and lighting he creates are made of wood and copper plates, and are more like art objects than furniture, combining distortion and cuteness.
What is the source of the ideas behind his unique designs as interior and art pieces?
He has been featured in various media such as The New York Times, Wallpaper, AD, and HYPEBEAST, and has attracted attention.
In this magazine, we will introduce him about skateboarding, furniture, and the man himself who enjoys creating his works by hand from start to finish using hand tools in his shared studio, his philosophy, work scenes, and his works.
"It's nice to be able to create your own story by making the things you really want to make.
I think it's like making a staircase with a skateboard.
You need skill to get rid of your fear, and the sense of accomplishment and fulfillment when you make it is the best. " (From the magazine interview)

Paradise Eight Films has been accompanying us since Issue 03.
This time, the photo was taken on 8mm Hi8 film in New York.

The film has a unique color, and there are many scenes that are difficult to convey in photographs, as well as scenes not published in the magazine. You will definitely enjoy it even more if you look at it together with the magazine.

Writer - Taku Takemura

Editor/writer. Born in Tokyo. Discovered skateboarding at the age of 13.
He moved to the United States at the age of 21, fascinated by American culture.
He worked as a coordinator for culture magazines, fashion magazines, advertising, etc. in Los Angeles.
After returning to Japan, he wrote for culture magazines and fashion magazines as an editor/writer.
He is also involved in advertising production both in Japan and overseas.
He introduces American skaters and artists to Japan, and works as a curator for preview screenings and photo exhibition groups.
His books include "New New Thailand: The Thailand I Like" (Two Virgins), which introduces the evolving Thai culture from a new perspective, and "A Way of Life: Journals of 28 Creators" (P-vine Books), a collection of interviews with American skaters and artists.
